In the vibrant city of Guadalajara, Mexico, a remarkable transformation is taking place at Escuela Urbana, a primary school in a west-side neighbourhood. Once limited by a lack of resources, the school now stands as a beacon of opportunity thanks to a cutting-edge digital lab.
This new space is part of the N50 Zona Digital project, supported by SMART Technologies, Arrow and other partners. The lab features 40 workstations powered by just 10 computers, SMART Boards for hands-on learning and a reliable internet connection—tools that promise to bridge the digital gap for 160 fifth and sixth graders who now have access to digital learning tools and new tech skills.
“What we hope for these students is to gain familiarity with the technology and bridge these digital gaps, so they can be the engineers of the future,” says Maria Alejandra Cuen Loredo, a business operations lead for Intel, an N50 partner.
The EdTech Equity Initiative, led by SMART Technologies, addresses a global issue: nearly half of the world’s schools lack the infrastructure for online learning and 1.3 billion students still do not have internet access at home. SMART’s work with N50 offers a cost-effective, scalable solution that can create transformative change, not just in Guadalajara but worldwide.
“This is not just about the haves and have-nots,” explains Daniel Gutwein, N50 Executive Director. “It is about those who will accelerate and get the jobs of the future and those who will not.”
This success in Guadalajara is just the start. In the next three years, N50 plans to deploy hundreds of labs across Africa and the Americas, with the next stop being a second digital lab in Mexico City.
