Second-largest school district in South Carolina engages students with SMART solutions
CALGARY, Alberta --- September 22, 2011 --- SMART Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SMT) (TSX: SMA), a leading provider of collaboration solutions, announces that Charleston County School District (CCSD) in Charleston, South Carolina, has installed more than 3,500 SMART Document Cameras. In the current school year, teachers will begin using Mixed Reality Tools, a feature of the SMART Document Camera 330, which enables the presentation of 2D, 3D, text, animation and audio-enriched content on the SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard. CCSD officials say they chose the SMART Document Camera 330 for its ease of use and seamless integration with the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and SMART Notebook™ collaborative learning software. Over the past five years, CCSD has installed more than 3,500 SMART Board interactive whiteboards throughout the district and three years ago chose to standardize on SMART. The district has adopted several other SMART products to enhance their technology-enabled learning environments, including the SMART Response™ interactive response system, SMART Classroom Suite™ interactive learning software, SMART Ideas™ concept mapping software and the SMART Slate™ wireless slate.
Teachers at CCSD use SMART education solutions across all grade levels and subject areas, beginning in early education, with students as young as two years of age, and extending through adult education programs. District officials say they chose SMART because, unlike pen-based systems, the SMART Board interactive whiteboard enables all students – including early learners and students with special learning needs – to easily and intuitively engage with interactive content. Officials also cited the ease of use and versatility of SMART Notebook software as another reason for choosing SMART education solutions. After completing a wide range of training on SMART products, a number of educators at CCSD have created an extensive SMART Notebook software lesson bank, enabling them to upload and share lessons with peers. Educators who contribute to the lesson bank follow a specific teaching model to create approved content, with a goal of covering all state standards and indicators in all grade levels and subject areas. Educators at CCSD have also developed a number of comprehensive training programs, including a 30-minute introduction to the SMART Document Camera, an extensive course on the SMART Response system, several professional development courses on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and a training course on mixed reality. In the 2011–12 school year, district officials will also launch an evaluation to further gauge the impact that using SMART products has had on teaching and learning across the district.
“We use SMART products across all grades and all classes, from math to language arts to social studies, because they’re invaluable across the curriculum and make learning come alive for all students,” says Timothy Tanner, Technology Integration Specialist, Charleston Country School District. “Using SMART products in the classroom has enabled our teachers to make interactive content a seamless part of their instruction, which we anticipate will result in increased student engagement, and improved test scores and student behavior across the district.”
“Administrators and teachers at Charleston County School District clearly recognize the immense value of SMART education solutions to engage and support today’s learners,” says Patric Nagel, Vice President, Sales, Americas, SMART Technologies. “Creating enriching, technology-enabled learning environments for their students illustrates how dedicated the teachers and administrators at CCSD are to ensuring that all students will benefit from having the tools and resources they need to support their success now and in the future.”
