Ed
Galvin, Jr. meant a lot to us over a long period of time. Until his death in
July 2000, Ed was SMART's sole outside director, with us from the beginning.
There were many times when the three of us would hold an unofficial directors
meeting and talk through the challenges facing us. Always in a calm, measured
way Ed would listen and then encourage. By the end of the meeting, Ed would
have let us talk enough and he would have asked sufficient probing questions
to allow us to see our way through issues that only a short time before had
seemed insurmountable. We always left a meeting with Ed better off than when
we started. Ed only wanted to see us and SMART succeed. He took a long-term view of life and business, and eased much of our impatience for quick results. Ed had a broad range of business and personal interests, and he was quick to share his experiences and sense of humor with us. Ed helped us unselfishly at a time when there was no reason to. For that and his generous friendship we will be eternally thankful. Like Ed, there are other individuals who have helped us along the way. We have established this award in Ed’s name as a way of acknowledging the help that has been provided in so many different ways. David Martin & Nancy Knowlton Ed Galvin, Jr. Award Recipients
