Notebook SEIf you’ve experienced SMART Notebook software, you’ve probably noticed the impact it can have on everyday lessons – transforming them into interactive learning opportunities.

Now, that powerful and intuitive software is available for students – SMART Notebook Student Edition. Created for the way today’s students interact with information, this beta version enables them to organize their projects and complete assignments in a personalized and nonlinear format. An intuitive interface enables students to find and categorize their notes, and manage their due dates with ease.

The software is also integrated with www.tutor.com, a tutoring and homework help service, so students can receive help with completing their coursework – anytime, anywhere and on any computing device.

SMART Notebook Student Edition Frequently asked questions

Are there any requirements to participate in the evaluation of the SMART Notebook Student Edition beta?
You have only to register to be able to download this worldwide public beta. When you download the SMART Notebook Student Edition beta, you will be prompted to fill out the registration form before you can start the download.

What is the difference between SMART Notebook and SMART Notebook SE software?
The applications accommodate the needs of different users. SMART Notebook enables teachers to create, deliver and manage dynamic, media-rich lesson activities from within one application. Teachers would normally teach these lessons using a SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard or Sympodium™ interactive pen display. SMART Notebook Student Edition meets the needs of digital natives. It caters to nonlinear, higher order thinking and enables them to manage, sort and categorize their in-class and at-home assignments. With more mouse tools, the software is designed for use on a computing device and not on a whiteboard.

Do you have to activate SMART Notebook SE?
No, you do not need to activate the SMART Notebook Student Edition beta. Once you’ve completed the registration form and the software installation, you can instantly begin using SMART Notebook SE.

Can my students install the beta at home?
Yes, students can install the beta version anywhere they need to access the software. When the product is released in 2009, the software will be available for purchase on a USB drive that automatically runs without installation.

Do I need to uninstall SMART Notebook 10 to install SMART Notebook SE?
No, you do not need to uninstall SMART Notebook 10 in order to complete the SMART Notebook Student Edition install.

Can SMART Notebook SE and SMART Notebook 10 be installed on the same computer?
Yes. Both applications can exist on the same computer. You can set one application as the default to open your SMART Notebook and SMART Notebook Student Edition files. However, SMART Notebook is made for teachers’ use, while SMART Notebook SE is designed for students to use at a computer.

Can I install SMART Notebook SE over a network?
Yes. You can install SMART Notebook Student Edition over a network using the Admin Install application provided by SMART Technologies.

When installing over a network, you should pay close attention to the My Binder location options. There is an option that allows all My Binder folders to reside on a network. Student folders will be created when they log on to the system, and each student will be able to access their files only, based on their own logon information. This is useful for computers that have multiple users, such as those in a computer lab.

How do students save their files?
In the current beta version, all SMART Notebook Student Edition files are copied into the My Binder folder. During the installation, you can specify where your My Binder folder is located.

To save a SMART Notebook SE file, students simply click the Save or Save As buttons on the File menu. If files are changed in any way, and the changes have not been saved, an asterisk is added to the title. When students close a file, they will be asked if they would like to save any files that have been modified.

How do I transfer a file that I have created in SMART Notebook to my students who are using SMART Notebook SE?
You can transfer files using any method you currently use, which may include e-mailing, uploading to a shared network, VLE systems, Web lockers and USB keys. If you already have SynchronEyes™ classroom management software, you can use the one-click transfer within the application.

Does SMART Notebook SE work with the Senteo™ interactive response system?
No, SMART Notebook Student Edition does not work with Senteo. Teachers can use the Senteo interactive response system only with SMART Notebook.

What languages does SMART Notebook SE support?
The SMART Notebook Student Edition beta version currently supports English only. When the full version of SMART Notebook SE is released in 2009, it will support the following 10 additional languages: French, German, Spanish (Mexico and Spain), Turkish, Greek, Italian, Chinese (simplified), Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil, Portugal) and Russian.

How do I provide feedback on the SMART Notebook SE beta?
To provide us with your feedback, you can click on a built-in feedback link that is located on the My Home Page tab within SMART Notebook Student Edition, or you can e-mail us at beta@smarttech.com.

When will the SMART Notebook SE beta expire?
The beta will run until the full version is on the market. We expect this to be in the first quarter of 2009.
